I just received a dreaded notice yesterday from Rockland Electric. They will be switching over to smart meters over the next few months. I knew that this day was coming, since it is been happening across America.
“New and improved” is sometimes just new and not improved. Smart meters are a prime example.
The smart meter opt-out will cost you $15.00/month, which is a small price to pay for your family’s better health.
I have been studying health, longevity and the environment for decades. I am a former science teacher, have a MA in Environmental Health and have been a practicing holistic chiropractor for 32 years.
Take Back Your Power
This documentary investigates many of the problems associated with smart meters.
The dangers of smart meters came to Josh’s attention after his friend suddenly fell ill right after having a smart meter installed in her home.
Can microwave radio frequencies (RF) from smart meters really impact your health? This is one topic that they investigate in this stunning documentary.
Everyone isn’t impacted in the same manner by RF radiation. Some people are extremely sensitive to RF radiation and others are not. Just like some people are ultra allergic to poison ivy and others can rub the leaves on themselves with no ill effects.
Informed consent is a term used in healthcare to give a patient knowledge about the potential risks involved pertaining to a treatment or procedure. For example; 2% of patients die during this type of surgery, 85% improve tremendously, 10% stay the same and 3% get worse. This knowledge gives patients and their families valuable input prior to making an informed decision.
Smart meters don’t fall under these healthcare guidelines and the health risks are not shared with consumers by the power companies. There is no informed decision or informed consent. Smart meters are just being force fed on the public without any facts being disseminated by the utility companies about their downside.
This blog and the documentary Take back Your Power will allow you to make an informed choice. I urge you to set aside the time to watch this documentary that is only free to watch until August 11th.
If people ignore the smart meter problem, the problem will not ignore them.
The good news is that even if a smart meter is installed at your home, you can still opt-out in most communities.
If you already have a smart meter, all is not lost. In Ramsey, NJ for example, it will cost you an extra $45.00 to have a traditional meter replace a smart meter. You only have 30 days after you receive the Rockland Electric notice to opt-out before your meter will be installed, so why not take care of that today?
Radiofrequency EMF = Possibly Carcinogenic to Humans
Josh del Sol dives into the claims of health effects reported after the installation of these devices.
In May 2011, the cancer research arm of the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Agency for Research on Cancer, classified radiofrequency EMF, such as that sent and received by smart meters, to be a class 2B carcinogen, meaning it is possibly carcinogenic to humans.
Utility companies claim the smart meters are only “on” for 45 to 60 seconds per day, when sending and receiving information, but that is far from the whole story. David Carpenter, director of the Institute for Health and the Environment (a collaborating center of the WHO) and professor of environmental health sciences at Albany School of Public Health in New York, is an expert on human health effects of environmental contaminants. Under court order, Pacific Gas and Electric admitted that their smart meters generate 14,000 spikes of communication per day, Carpenter says.
He further explains that it doesn’t matter how frequently the smart meter communicates with the utility company. What matters is how frequently they generate RF fields.
Clearly, the utilities have been hiding the fact that these smart meters generate these radiofrequency fields almost continuously, he says. They’re pulses, but they’re very, very frequent. In other words, while the smart meter is sending and receiving information for a total of about 60 seconds a day, the utility companies conveniently withheld the detail that these 60 seconds are not consecutive. They’re split up into microsecond pulses that are emitted 24/7.
Health Effects Versus Public Safety Standards
Forty minutes into the film, del Sol reviews and summarizes some of the mounting scientific evidence showing RF microwaves do in fact have biological effects. Measurements show a single smart meter has a power density of about 7.9 to 8.0 microwatts per centimeter squared (μW/cm²). Those levels are far higher than the power density found to cause health effects such as:
- Altered calcium metabolism in the heart occurs at a power density of 2.5 μW/cm²
- Changes in the hippocampus, affecting memory and learning, occur at 4.0 μW/cm²
- DNA damage in cells occurs at 6.0 μW/cm²
Research Reveals How Microwaves Cause Biological Harm
Recent research by Dr. Martin Pall suggests that a previously unknown mechanism of biological harm occurs from microwaves emitted by wireless technologies. That harm occurs to voltage gated calcium channels (VGCCs) in our cell membranes. These VGCCs are activated by microwaves and when that happens, about 1 million calcium ions per second are released. These ions stimulate the release of nitric oxide (NO) inside your cell and mitochondria, which combines with superoxide to form peroxynitrite, which in turn creates hydroxyl free radicals.
Hydroxyl free radicals are the most destructive free radicals known to man. They destroy nuclear DNA and lead to mitochondrial dysfunction, which we now know is at the heart of most chronic disease. Alzheimer’s, anxiety, depression, ADHA, autism, cardiac arrhythmias and infertility can be directly related to excessive microwave exposure.
Dr. Pall’s research explains why the argument that microwave radiation is not high enough to cause biological damage is fatally flawed.
Blood Work Confirms Adverse Health Effects Following Smart Meter Installation
As noted by Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt in the film, blood testing reveals a number of measurable effects after the installation of smart meters. Observed symptoms include significant elevations in the inflammatory markers TGF-beta 1 and MMP-9. Inflammation is the hallmark of chronic disease. Copper serum levels also rise, which is another sign of chronic inflammation. Hormones and neurotransmitter levels are also adversely affected.
Grassroots Movements Fight Smart Meter Installations Across America
Thousands of people report being harmed by their smart meters. Doctors report measurable health effects. The scientific literature reports distinct and in some cases serious health effects from RF. This is why there are grass root movements across the country to inform people of these risks.
The Smart Grid is Costing Taxpayers Billions
The smart grid promised to deliver enhanced energy security, greenhouse gas reductions, improved air quality and increased grid asset utilization. While this sounds good in theory, the documentary points out that there are many technical problems with the smart grid and with smart meters. Hundreds have caught fire. The documentary sites that many are improperly installed by employees without electrical degrees. Some have nothing more than a two-week training course under their belt.
According to the film, some $11 billion of taxpayers’ monies have gone to fund the smart grid rollout. Estimates suggested building this grid could lead to a 4% reduction in energy usage by 2030, but real-world evidence shows smart meters result in no energy savings at all. According to a senior assistant to the attorney general for public utilities in Illinois, Susan Satter, “The report shows zero statistically different result in usage, compared to business as usual.”
Real-world evidence also shows the smart grid has artificially raised energy usage, resulting in thousands of homeowners complaining of ludicrous overcharges. In one instance, a homeowner’s bill went from $350 to more than $1,100 in the month following the installation of a smart meter. The power company, PG & E, insisted the smart meter was working properly.
According to a survey by Toronto Hydro, 80% of homeowners with smart meters reported price increases on their bills, which is the exact opposite of what the smart grid promised to deliver.
In a June 21, 2011, Chicago Tribune article, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan wrote: “The utilities have shown no evidence of billions of dollars of benefits to consumers from these new meters, but they have shown they know how to profit. I think the only question is: How dumb do they think we are?”
Smart Grid Vulnerability & Privacy Concerns
Security experts have also pointed out that the smart grid is vulnerable to a number of potentially catastrophic security breaches. Not only could hackers get into your home, they could bring down the entire electric grid of a nation. In other words, the smart grid poses an unprecedented cybersecurity problem.
Each smart appliance in your home has a unique code, allowing the meter to collect data on the exact time you use them and for how long. All of this energy usage data can then be used to create a profile of the residents living in the home.
A Congressional research report, “Smart Meter Data: Privacy and Cybersecurity,” published in February 2012, concluded smart meters are in fact a violation of the Fourth Amendment, noting that:
“In no uncertain terms the Court has asserted that at the very core [of the Fourth Amendment] stands the right of a man to retreat into his own home and there be free from unreasonable government intrusion …
Who Has Access to Your Energy Usage Data?
In California, power companies are already selling private energy usage data to third parties, says Joshua Hart, director of StopSmartMeters.org.
According to former CIA director David Petraeus, the U.S. government has the ability to “spy on you through your dishwasher.” Crane calls this “control freakery.”
